Bringing films from concept to completion requires a skill set in both art and technology. Innovations in techniques, communication, and distribution channels have leveled the playing field for independent filmmakers, but mastering the core elements of a compelling film remains vital.

In Full Sail University's Film Production master of fine arts program, you'll receive an advanced education centering on film fundamentals such as storytelling, visual aesthetics, and technical roles. You will put your skills to work in Full Sail's professional studios and facilities, including sound stages and the Backlot – getting familiar with industry equipment, software and technology. This will all come together as you build a graduate-level portfolio to showcase your talents.

Story Development & Preproduction

  • Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership - Students explore the concept of mastery from an interdisciplinary perspective, utilizing historical case studies, anthropology, leadership science, and neuroscience.
  • Filmmaking Concepts & Practices - Students learn how to apply filmmaking concepts and theory to the practice of film production in terms of production design, cinematography, and film aesthetics.
  • Script Production & Analysis - Students work on their own film scripts in this comprehensive writing course while engaging with the course instructor through in-class readings to receive oral and written feedback.

Film Production Techniques & Technology

  • Directing Talent - Students examine the scope of a director's creative and operational tasks from preproduction, to the set, and through postproduction with an emphasis on hands-on, collaborative teamwork.
  • Independent Filmmaking - Students will examine approaches to content, structure, style, and technology consistent with independent filmmaking and apply these tactics to create their own short films.
  • Visual Storytelling Techniques and Technology - Students explore a variety of interdisciplinary topics that inform the selection and use of filmmaking methods from fields such as physics, neuroscience, psychology, and the humanities.

Postproduction & The Business of Film

  • Entertainment and Communication Law - Students examine standard financial, licensing, and employment agreements used in the industry while also discussing contract negotiation, distribution presales, tax shelters, and compensation.
  • Film Production Thesis III: Postproduction - Students work in hands-on exercises to leverage the appropriate tools and technologies for editing their film project while receiving feedback from mentors and instructors.
  • Film Production Thesis IV: Film Assembly - Students focus on editing their film and using appropriate technologies, color correction tools, and techniques for generating high-quality films.
